On Thursday, Oct 29 2009 disaster striked caused a row of 16 stalls wiped off when fire razed at about 3.00 pm in Taman Ria Market, Sungai Petani.
Rescue were deployed to the area from Sungai Petani Fire Department, Tikam Batu, Merbok, Bedong and Gurun volunteer units. Fire spreaded blazingly fast and unfortunately the water pressure was low at that time making it difficult in dousing the fire.
There were explosions during the fire as most of the shops has cooking gas tanks and thick dark clouds of smoke can be seen from few kilometres away.
It was believe that the fire started from the back portion of the market.
